Happily living in rural France!
Jeremy and I first bought our property in rural, central France in June 2007. The property consists of a 12 acre fermette, or small farm with a large farmhouse, several barns, a large bread oven and a well. We use the land for our 4 horses and to grow our own hay, as well as having a very productive potager (large vegetable plot).
In the last 3 years we have renovated part of one of the barns, which is now used as a gite. We were extremely lucky to have an old friend who came to help us get the project well on it's way. Between the three of us we did the vast majority of the work ourselves. The original character of the barn has been kept, with many materials such as oak beams and original stone being reused, for example to build the window seat in the living room.
We chose to come to this part of France because it is so quiet and unspoilt. The pace of life here is much slower than in the UK with most people taking a 2 hour lunch break. The local auberges (the closest you will find to a British pub) provide a very reasonably priced menu or plat du jour at lunchtime. Our favourite is at Marigny, where you will be offered 3 courses with wine, cheese and coffee included, for about 13 euros a head!
The local people are very welcoming and friendly, especially if you have a basic grasp of the French language. The roads are very quiet and many are old Roman roads, long and straight, often with a fine view of a church ahead of you, on the approach to a village.
We live in a small hamlet of 4 houses about 3km from Bourbon L'Archambault, a small quaint medieval town. The Bourbonnais region was home to the kings of France for many years and so the area is steeped in history. In the town is a medieval fortress open to the public, with amazing views from the top of the 3 towers. On 14th July (Bastille Day) there is a spectacular fireworks display in the grounds of the castle, set to music.
We area is excellent for walking, cycling and horseriding, all of which we enjoy. From home, we can access quiet lanes and tracks and the local forest. A little further afield is the 22,000 hectare Foret de Troncais with a maze of footpaths, cycle routes and bridleways. In the autumn, the locals all visit the forest just as dusk falls to listen to the stags bellowing in the rutting season. We have a selection of bicycles for you to use and lead pony riding can be arranged around our property.
The locals are keen on folk music of all kinds and there are many music festivals all over the region in the summer months.
The climate here is perfect for those who love the warmth of the sun, interspersed with spectacular thunderstorms and the occasional rainy day. We are often able to eat out of doors from late March, early April right up until the end of October. The winters by contrast are cold and frosty with our fair share of snowy days. The temperatures can drop to -15/20 at night for 2-3 weeks in January and February. We really appreciate the warmth from our wood burning stove at this time of year. Frequently, the frost stays on the trees all day, making for a magical ambiance.
