Vacation Rental Description
Mike and Sylvia Johnson would like to welcome you to Hen House cottage where you will always be able to relax and unwind in peace and tranquility whilst having free access to our grounds and swimming pool. We have a 9m x 6m swimming pool which guests share with ourselves and the guests in our other, four person cottage, (see Corn Corner - property number 16065). Guests are welcome to wander in our 1.3 hectares provided they respect the privacy of ourselves and any other guests. There is a small pond where, in springtime, you might catch sight of nesting moorhens, if you’re quiet.
Hen House cottage is situated about 20 miles south of the Dordogne river and Bergerac, in quiet countryside about one and a half miles from Villeréal.
Villeréal has all amenities including boulangerie, patisserie, charcuteries and two supermarkets supplying all everyday needs, as well as an excellent Saturday morning market throughout the year and a Wednesday market during summer. There are even three estate agents if you are property hunting.
In Villeréal and the surrounding area you will be able to sample local food and wines in a varied selection of restaurants, discover Lot et Garonne's beautiful countryside and interesting chateaux or stroll through a market a day. This all within a few kilometres of our pretty spot of heaven.
Hen House is in the grounds of our house, but detached from it. It is a single storey cottage with modern style furnishings and tiled floors throughout.
The safety fencing seen in the photograph of the pool conforms to the current legal requirements.
Your PETS are welcome to a holiday as well, but PLEASE CONSULT BEFORE booking.
Facilities
Hen House is a single storey, totally renovated cottage with tiled floors throughout, (previous owners have flown the coup). It has one bedroom with wardrobe storage, chest of drawers and double bed. Bed linen is provided and exchanged weekly if required. The shower room, tiled throughout, has toilet, washbasin and shower and also houses the washing machine. Towels are NOT provided. The living area includes a four ring cooker with oven and is very well equipped including, food mixer, cafetiere and kettle. There is also an iron and ironing board. A radio/cassette/cd player is provided. Outside there is a small terrace with patio table, chairs, parasol, sunbeds, BBQ and a clothes line. Electric heating is provided in low season, and included in the rental fee. Paperbacks and a few board games or a pack of cards can be loaned during your stay.
Activities
We are situated 3kms from Villeréal, an ancient bastide town where the tourist office has information on all local events and attractions and there is a file of leaflets kept in Hen House. If you fancy a flutter you can try the horse trotting races at our local hippodrome.
Within a few kilometres you can discover Lot et Garonne's beautiful countryside and the interesting chateaux of this area and the nearby Dordogne, such as Château Biron, only 5 kms away and well worth a visit.
Set in walking, fishing and cycling countryside, it's a short drive to golf, boat trips or canoeing and for the children there's Walibi theme park, go-karts or a local nature / adventure park. If you don't fancy cooking then try a perfectly prepared meal from the charcuterie or eat out at one of a wide variety of restaurants in the area. In summer you can even try a gastronomic train ride being served samples of regional food and wine on the way.
Travel Options
- Nearest Airport : Bergerac at 30 kilometers distance;
- Nearest Train Station : Bergerac at 35 kilometers distance
- Nearest Town : Villereal at 3 kilometers distance
- Travel Info: Travel Information : A car is advisable. If driving from the U.K. it is about 400 miles from St. Malo or Caen, about 600 miles from Calais or Boulogne. Ryanair, Jet2 and FlyBE offer flights to Bergerac, (30 minutes drive from us), from London Stansted, Bristol, Southampton, Leeds / Bradford and Liverpool. Other airlines fly to Bordeaux and Toulouse, each about an easy two hours drive from us. It is advisable to pre-book if you wish to hire a car from Bergerac airport. From 2007 FlyBe are also offering summer season flights from Newcastle to Limoges, about a 3 hour drive from us. Also worth considering is Eurostar to Lille then TGV to Bordeaux, plus car hire.

The weekly rates shown alongside are based on your arrival date. Bookings are usually from 2p.m. Sunday to 10a.m. Sunday but can be varied outside high season. A NON REFUNDABLE booking deposit of £20 (or 30 Euros) PER WEEK MUST BE RECEIVED before any booking can be confirmed and we expect to receive the BALANCE THREE WEEKS PRIOR to arrival. We accept sterling cheques but NOT CASH. We accept Euro cheques only on a FRENCH BANK ACCOUNT and will accept the balance in Euros in cash ON ARRIVAL but only by PRIOR ARRANGEMENT. Payment can also be made direct into our British bank account. We can NOT accept bank or credit cards. On receipt of payment we confirm the booking and forward a simple map to help you find us from Villereal. 150 Euros in cash is payable on arrival as a REFUNDABLE SECURITY DEPOSIT to cover possible loss, damages or breakages.

We've been meaning to come to the Hen House for many years now and have not been disappointed.
As others have said, it's superbly equipped. The garden gives ample shade for reading and the pool was our particular delight.
The sunflowers were in all their glory while we were here and inspired Nick to break out the watercolours to paint some personal souvenirs.
Thanks for the welcoming wine and flowers, and thank you most of all for sharing this lovely part of France with us.
