The situation of this property is ideal for anyone whishing to explore all the wine regions of Bordeaux.
Nearest village is Rauzan with a restaurant, 2 bakers, butcher, General Store, Patisserie, Pharmacy, Post office, Bank etc. Castillon Le Battaile, Monsegur, Sauveterre, Libourne and Stey Foy le Grande are within easy distance where there are large supermarkets and lovely French markets. The World Heritage Site of St Emilion is about 15 minutes away with all sorts of fantastic restaurants and wine tasting. This is an ideal base from which to explore the wine areas of Bordeaux.
Each summer a cast of several thousand people and horses act out the Battle of Castillon which in 1453 saw the French finally drive the English out of France. This is a spectacular show and another "must see".
The area is well-known for its wine growing appellations including Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, St Emilion, Sauternes, Medoc, Bergerac and Cotes de Duras. This property is ideally located for the wine connoisseur wishing to visit all of these famous regions.
Entre-deux-mers has undulating hillsides covered in vines, woodland and pasture. It is undoubtadly the prettiest area around Bordeaux, and that together with high sunshine makes it an ideal holiday destination.
The area is steeped in history and there are charming bastides towns with open air markets, Roman churches, and the battle of Castillon is re-enacted every summer here. The wine festivals at St Emilion are a must for wine lovers.
A visit to historic Saint Emilion is an absolute must for its narrow cobbled streets, medieval buildings, wine shops and very good places to eat. It is home to world renowned wines and a superb maison du vin and cave co-operative. The town of Branne lies on the Dordogne with its famous bridge designed by Gustav Eiffel and its beautiful twin towered church.
The weather on the whole is superb. In summer there is hardly any rain, spring is pleasant, and September is just a delight.
Excursions to St Emilion, Bordeaux and Bergerac are of course the most enjoyable for the adults, but children can have a lot of fun too. The beautiful seaside resort of Arcachon (80 mins) boasts miles of golden sand, the world's largest sand dune - the Dune de Pyla - and water parks. Bordeaux has a couple of zoos.
There are several transport museums and a steam railway (summer only) nearby. The grottos and chateaux of the Dordogne Valley are also in easy striking distance and the Roman remains at Montagne are well worth a visit. Perigeux, Sarlat and Lascaux make splendid day trips.
Wine and food festivals abound during the summer months. Look out for the St Emilion wine festival in June and the bread, cheese and wine festival in Langon at the beginning of September - both well worth a visit.
