Vacation Rental Description
The Pigeonnier dates from a quieter age; three storeys high, with traditional stone and earth walls nearly a metre thick, it is surrounded by trees and set in a hectare (two acres) of private meadow land. The only other house on the property belongs to the owners, who respect their guests' privacy but are always happy to assist.
The top floor, which was once home to flocks of pigeons, is now empty. This one-bedroom house is ideal for a couple who want to explore the Dordogne region - or just sit around and relax.
In front of the pigeonnier, an outside terrace is the place to take breakfast, with pretty views over the valley. When the sun gets too hot, a second terrace, covered and partially enclosed, has a barbecue, dining area and a couple of armchairs.
Hammocks under the pine trees are just the thing for a siesta. Guests have full access to a large, heated swimming pool (5 x 10 metres) and their own private entrance.
On the ground floor, the well equipped kitchen has a fridge/freezer, ceramic stovetop, oven and microwave, plus a small round table and two chairs. The bathroom has a shower, washbasin and toilet.
Outside steps lead up to a small balcony, where you can enjoy an early morning cup of tea or a last look at the stars, and to the bedroom, which has a double bed and an antique grandfather clock with hands stuck permanently at five minutes past 3 o’clock, making sure that time stands still in this place.
There is a television and DVD player with a collection of movies.
Sainte-Alvère , 5 minutes walk walk from the pigeonnier, is a small, pretty village which provides most basic necessities.
In addition to the boulangerie (essential to every French village!), the town has a lively weekly street market (Monday mornings), a well-stocked mini-market, a café/newspaper shop, a restaurant, post office, hairdresser, pharmacy, medical centre, a petrol station, ATM machine and a church.
