Relaxing great house and fantastic hosts

Chris Shepparton Australia

Review Submitted: July 25, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010

In our month long trip around France Franchmont was where we felt most welcome. The accommodation is spacious and high quality with comfortable beds and a well appointed kitchen and luxurious bathrooms. The gardens and pool are fantastic and the location close to town and walking paths. While the unit is attached to the house it has a separate entrance and if you wanted no contact with the hosts you could do this
Bergerac is close to both the wine areas of St Emilion and the attractions of the Dordogne. But none of these are the best quality of this property.Pascale and Scott are the most welcoming of hosts-not intrusive but very helpful, fluent in English and French and nothing seemed to be any trouble.Advice on which attractions were the best to see and how long to get there, the best markets , the best shops in town was available but not forced upon you.
I would highly recommend staying with this lovely family in this great house-we would certainly go back.

We had an brilliant week staying at this Gite. Scott and Pascalle couldn't have made us feel more welcome. The children really enjoyed all the cycling, swimming , table tennis and the zip wire.
Our son (12yrs) had a great time fishing with Scott and Pascale's son and he is already missing his time there and planning next years return!
We visited vineyards, caves, and had an amazing evening in Bergerac watching the fireworks on Bastille Day....not to mention an excellent Michelin Star restaurant nearby.......
The Gite was clean, well equipt and full of character. The pool and gardens really relaxing and altogether a wonderful place to spend a week in the Dordogne.
We will return! Thank you.

I
t's hard booking a house 12000 miles away, but once we had made contact it just got easier and easier. The house has been beautifully and thoughtfully restored with huge bedrooms and bathrooms, lots of towels for the bathrooms and pool, even hairdriers are supplied.
Scott and Pascale could not have been more helpful or thoughtful hosts, where to go what to see, where to shop and which markets to go to. Never intruding yet always available.
We had various friends and family to stay, all of them keen to return, with or without us!

This review is really difficult as every possible comment has previously been said. Our stay was so much more than any regular vacation. Pascall and Scott could not have done more to cater to our every need.
We had a medical emergency whilst staying there and Pascall and Scott were at our side to assist in every possible way. We cannot thank them enough. Should any other holiday maker be unfortunate to need medical attention, we can say that in our crisis ,the hospital in Bergerac, was extremely efficient and the treatment excellent.
We would not hesitate to recommend this property and the ever caring owners.

We loved our stay here. Huge bedrooms and bathrooms superbly decorated, clean, well provided. Hosts very friendly and helpful but not intrusive. Gorgeous surrounds and lots of interesting places in nearby areas. Even better than it looks. We had a car which we used everyday but they did have bicycles available for use. We most definately recommend this place.

Franchemont at Bergerac

Franchemont
A picture perfect large historic two storey stone home of infinite charm & character is a must for travellers to the region. Beautifully maintained, set in expansive grounds with heated pool, fruit trees, a family of squirrels & featuring picturesque walks along the river to town, your stay can be as relaxing or active as you wish.
Having a car is desirable for touring, where within modest kms, you will experience everything from great restaurants, vineyards, castles, chateaux, wonderful local markets, prehistoric sites, shopping, or to just soak up the French countryside. Don’t forget to visit the unforgettable towns of Bergerac, Montpazier, Perigueux, Saint Cyprien, Issigeac, Sarlat etc.
Your multi lingual hosts Scott & Pascale are always generous with their time to just chat, share a bottle of local wine or to offer suggestions for activities to suit all tastes. They will ensure your stay is truly memorable.
Back in Australia, rarely a day goes by when our thoughts do not stray to our wonderful stay with Scott & Pascale in their French paradise - Franchemont. We’ll be back.

I really don't think we could say anything that hasn't already been said about Franchemont and it's owners.

This is a really great place to stay, very relaxing, peaceful, clean and spacious, it had all we needed for a fantastic holiday. This property is only around 10kms from Bergerac Airport, very handy.

We were 2 couples 40-50's age bracket and found it really enjoyable that there were bikes available for us all to use. This area of France is relativley flat, so cycling wasn't strenuous in the hot weather. A cycle into town would only take around 10 minutes at a average pace, or you could take a leisurely walk in around 40 minutes along the river Dordogne into the centre of town. Bergerac town is charming with it's lovely narrow streets filled with shops and resturants to suit all tastes.
The bicycles also allowed us to get to the bakers every monring for fresh croissants and bread with the occassional pastry, just devine.

The pool is excellent for both adults and children as it is kept in scrupulously clean condition, there were several nights we had a BBQ sitting next to it watching the sun go down with a glass of fine local wine, just bliss!!!!!

We had a car which allowed us to visit places further afield, but I wouldn't say it was essential.

Scott & Pascale are as everyone says extremely helpful and couldn't do enough for you and their son Stefan is a delightful child to have around, full of energy.

I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a chill out place to take there holiday, I can honestly say this is the first time I have really felt totally relaxed after a two week break.

We'd hoped that Franchemont was as good as the reviews we'd read here and we were not disappointed. The house is beautiful, in a lovely setting, also very clean and comfortable.
Scott and Pascale couldn't have been more helpful letting us know what was going on in the area and recommending places to see and places to eat etc.
We enjoyed lazing around the pool in the sunshine, buying local produce in local markets and dining out in Bergerac and surrounding villages.
Our son enjoys fishing and took part in a local competition which Pascale kindly enrolled him in. Even better when he won! Our teenage daughter, like many teenagers, spent a lot of time on Facebook, thank goodness for Scotts Wi-Fi!
This was probably one of the most relaxing holidays we've ever spent and would highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to get away from it all.
Thanks again Scott and Pascale and we hope to be back soon!

On arrival at this picturesque location we were picked up by Scott at the station. The gite was everything we could wish for. Spacious, clean and comfortable. Although the weather was not kind to us everyday Scott and Pascale could not have done more to make our holiday great. They took us to local markets and chateaux, wine tasting and site seeing. Nothing was too much trouble. When the sun shone we lazed by the beautiful pool othertimes we cycled, canoed and walked along the tow path of the river. We also played boules with their charming son Stefan and friends. We had an enjoyable meal in town with our hosts who could not have been better company. Mork and Mindy are in their eighties and thought this was the best holiday ever. We are all world travelled but would recommend this beautiful place for a peaceful and wonderful stay. We hope to repeat this holiday next year and look forward to seeing Scott, Pascale and Stefan again. Thank you again for a wonderful holiday and taking care of all our needs.

Franchemont was everything we hoped for and more! We were 2 couples staying at this lovingly restored and beautifully landscaped old British Armoury. Our hosts - Scott and Pascale rent out approximately 1/3 of the building they live in. Our space was large and private and had everything we needed - a well equipped kitchen, 2 gorgeous bedrooms, 2 separate bathrooms each with a separate shower.
Scott and Pascale went out of their way to help make our holiday at Franchemont a memorable one. They provided suggestions on local restaurants and information on interesting local sites to see. They even introduced us to a local winery where we met the wine maker and puchased some very tasty product. An enjoyable stay at a gorgeous retreat! Thanks again Scott and Pascale!

Review Submitted: April 22, 2010 Date of Stay: April 2010

Franchemont, known locally as the 'English House' for historic reasons dating back centuries, is the most beautiful house I've ever stayed in. On the bank of the famous river, within walking distance of a fascinating medieval town, was quite enough to keep me happy but on top of that Pascale and Scott's hospitality and welcome made my visit perfect. Although there are lots of interesting things to do, one of my favourite days was relaxing by the pool in the sunshine, enjoying the peace and quiet. I also slept well in the lovely, comfortable bedroom with fresh crisp white sheets! Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Visited Easter 2010 for a good measure of respite. Perfect location, with the Dordogne at the end of the garden, Bergerac only 15 mins walk away yet surrounded by peace, quiet and rural views. Pascale and Scott were perfect hosts, very welcoming - treating us to home cooking on our first night (as we arrived so late), a canoe trip down the river, allowing us to take over their TV to watch the new Dr Who in action, and a perfect playmate (their son) for our hyperactive daughter!
Only 10 mins away from Bergerac airport, they offer a great location to tour all the key attractions in the Dordogne. Thank you for a great week away from it all...

Review Submitted: August 31, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2008

If you are looking for a charming, romantic, friendly, tasteful, luxurious and above all authentic place in a magnificent and peaceful surrounding to spend some relaxing days off, I only can strongly recommend Pascale's and Scott's place. The historical "grand" house has been renovated and decorated with fine taste and great respect for its past and history. The interior with spacious rooms breathes the atmosphere of elegance and harmony so typical for old country houses. But this does not mean that there is no "modern" comfort, on the contrary both kitchen and bathrooms are fully equipped. Bergerac is an absolutely lovely little town, with a fantastic market where you can buy vegetables, cheeses, all kind of meat products etc... all produced by the local, absolutely friendly farmers and of course the typical "fois gras".. Also the wider surroundings, including vineyards and castles, do not disappoint. I even had the chance enjoying a couple of bicycle tours.

I had the pleasure already staying a couple of times at this wonderful place, and I am definitely looking forward to the next time !!

What a treat to arrive at this fantastic house after a week in hotels in Normandie! We were two couples staying the last week of July and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in the relaxing atmosphere with beautiful weather and lots to do and see. The cottage is extremely comfortable with spacious rooms lovely decorated and with everything you need. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly without being intrusive; they booked tables at superb local restaurants and took us wine tasting which was a treat. We spent our days relaxing by the salt water pool, visiting chateaux, canoeing on the Dordogne river, shopping delicious produce at the market in Bergerac and enjoying candlelit dinners by the pool. A perfect holiday and we will definately be back!

So took my boyfriend and myself over to this beautifully done up house in Bergerac the other week and must admit that we really rather enjoyed ourselves. Great hosts and magical scenery, just a short walk to the very pleasant town of Bergerac, where you can enjoy the greatest of delights of French food and wine!

There lots to do if you feel inclined with wine tasting, chateau visiting and adventurous days out such as canoeing along the Dordogne river, which is literally on the door step! Or not as the case may be... haha.

I'll be sure to book next year and even take another couple out with us, as there was loads of space for us, and the out door terrace and pool is brilliant for the money, with what can normally be expected...

Thanks very much for having us.

Stayed in August 2008, weather superb. Fantastic house in a beautiful and rural setting, although not cut off from local amenties. Bikes rides and canoeing for the boys whilst the girls sat by the pool relaxing! Wonderful hosts who offer all that you need including introductions to local farmers markets and wine sellers//tasting. Great location for seeing the Dordogne area, good restaurants nearby. We took an 8 month old baby and this house was perfect for him. For golfers there is a great course nearby. Easy access from either Bordeaux or Bergerac airports. We hired a car at the airport. This is a great venue for the archetypal mellow French holiday. The setting is fabulous-a beautifully restored farmhouse on the banks of the Dordogne with a great, safe pool and garden with hosts who will help you make the most of the area. We canoed down the river in the very early morning, went on local bike rides, visited chateaux and had personal wine tasting visits to small local vineyards. We went to farm markets enjoying genuine rural french culture and hospitality on the way.Access is easy from the UK and we flew to Bordeaux which was only an hours simple drive away.
