Vacation Rental Description
PICTURE YOURSELF ON A PRIVATE ISLAND, lost in the Caribbean and forgotten by the world. No modern conveniences, no schedules, no problems. It sounds like a fantasy, but you can experience it yourself on Long Caye at Glover’s Reef, our adventure island retreat in Belize.
Each day we introduce a new sport. We begin by paddling to magical snorkeling spots or to nearby islands. Another day finds us in surf kayaks shredding the waves just off our shore, or scuba diving the underwater “Wall” within swimming distance of our island. At night we enjoy home-cooked meals featuring Belizean seafood.
Slickrock spares no effort to ensure that our tour is the best sea kayak trip in Central America, if not the entire Caribbean. In addition to the luxury of a secluded, private island, our gear is top-notch: we have surfboards, a fleet of 40+ sea kayaks, fishing and surf kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and windsurfing gear for all ability levels. We even pay for your fishing license! Dive packages are also available just down the beach for both certified divers and beginners.
Belize is famous for its reefs, and Glover’s Reef is considered the most pristine in the country. In recognition of the outstanding quality of the ecosystem, the atoll has been designated a National Marine Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect it for future generations. Our Water Sports Center on Long Caye sits amidst this underwater paradise, offering a backdrop few locations can match. We are the only adventure operation in Belize with a private island!
Perched on the brink of the continental shelf, our island base lies on the slender ring of Glover’s Atoll, 35 miles off the mainland. Within this necklace of coral, you’ll find more than 700 patch reefs brimming with the richest variety of marine life in the Caribbean.
Our guides are among the most experienced professionals in the business. Our facilities are rustic, private, and comfortable, featuring two-person, thatch-roofed cabanas perched right on shore. We have a rainwater collection system for drinking water, unlimited showers pumped by the sun (air temperature), and ecologically-friendly composting toilets. Our menu consistently receives rave reviews, and cold beer and soda are included in the trip price. Our boat leaves right out of Belize City for our guests’ convenience.
All of our prices are per person because we are selling a package, not just a room in a hotel. Our packages include hotels on the mainland before and after the full week island trip, transport to and from the island, lodging on the island, 3 meals/day, unlimited beer and soda, national park fees and fishing license fees, and complete use of our sports equipment, instruction in all sports, and daily guided activities all day long.
Let us help you plan additional days, we are always happy to provide advice. We have specialized in adventure travel since 1977, and this is our 24th year sharing the magic of Belize.
Facilities
When Slickrock first moved out to Glover's Reef Atoll in 1992 our goal was to develop a facility that feels non-developed. Throughout the Caribbean there are very few facilities that are this rustic by design.
On Long Caye development means fifteen cabanas, a well-stocked kitchen, solar-powered water pumps, a composting toilet, and a dive shop (the only thing not owned by Slickrock). There is no maid service; there are no air conditioners or flush toilets. But there is a fridge permanently loaded with Fantas and Belikin beer. It all represents the soft side of adventure travel - right down to the excellent Garifuna chefs who cook your meal and then sit down at the table with you to dine.
Each cabana has single or double beds and a porch with hammocks and lounge chairs. No air-conditioning is necessary since the ever-present breeze keeps the temperatures well below what they are on the mainland. Cabanas are lit with solar power.
