The Bahamas -- from the Spanish “baja mar” meaning shallow sea -- are an archipelago of more than 700 islands dotting more than 100,000 square miles in the Atlantic. Nassau reigns as the commonwealth’s capital from its vantage point on New Providence Island, adjacent to the glittering Paradise Island casino playground. Geography played a pivotal role in Bahamian history, especially after Christopher Columbus made his first new world landfall on San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. Observing the “baja mar,” he effectively named the area The Bahamas, or The Islands of the Shallow Sea. Proximity to Florida and well-traveled shipping channels made it popular for explorers, settlers, and traders. Although there are no rivers in The Bahamas, islanders take pride in having the world’s third longest barrier reef and more than 5 percent of the world’s coral in sparkling turquoise waters that are ideal for water sports. Charles Town on New Providence Island was burned to the ground by the Spanish in 1684, and around 1695 was rebuilt as Nassau to honor King William III (formerly Prince of Orange-Nassau). Nassau was first officially promoted as a winter resort in 1898 with the Hotel and Steam Ship Service Act. With Nassau as its capital, The Bahamas became a free and sovereign Commonwealth of The Bahamas in 1973, ending 325 years of British rule. Even so, The Bahamas has no army. Pharmaceuticals, cement, rum and crawfish are exported, yet it is tourism that supports half the Bahamian workforce.
