Vacation Rental Description
Nestled among one of Nova Scotia's prime lobster fishing communities on Sober Island, you will find total luxury for your family and friends in this amazing timber frame home on 5 very private acres along the Atlantic coast.
Custom built in 2001 by master craftsman, George Child, this unique home has few comparables anywhere. The traditional "post & beam" timber frame construction is mortised and tenon pegged with main members. The exterior walls have live sawn boards, the roof is made of Western Red Cedar shakes, and the interior walls have large exposed timbers with sheet rock and fabric covering. The beautiful stone walls supporting the overhang around north and east sides match the duel-lined chimney of the fireplace.
This cozy, Canada Select 4 star home is surrounded in a secluded setting by 726 feet of waterfront on a protected bay, mature Spruce and Fir trees, beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, a young apple orchard, berry patches, vineyard, and no visible neighbors or traffic. The yards are landscaped with rock walls, creeping flowering plants, lawns, flower beds, sitting areas, and post & rail fences.
You may prepare gourmet meals on either the AGA propane four oven stove or the wood burning Heartland Oval Stove. Curl up in front of a crackling fire by the floor to ceiling, hand crafted, stone fire place. Watch spectacular sunsets over the water from your living room windows. With the Sober Island shoreline at your feet, sea kayaking among the islands is a dream come true.
This home is so unique, warm, and inviting that you and your guests will never want to leave. Additional amenities include a small guest house 80 feet from main house. It is wired with electricity and fully insulated on two floors. The ground floor has a sitting area while the upper level is a loft sleeping area. This extra living space can also be used for private time, or a play space where kids can enjoy their own private getaway.
Surrounding Area: Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, is a quiet, friendly and well-serviced rural village on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia ten minutes from the home. The area reflects a rich lumbering and fishing history. Magnificent scenic bays and inlets abound where active lobster fishing wharves continue in use today. Guided sea kayaking tours can be found in nearby Tangier with Coastal Adventures. The Liscomb Game Sanctuary, about 25 minutes drive, is the second-largest in the province. This area offers opportunities for canoeing, hiking and fishing.
Sober Island: As well as offering fabulous sea kayaking, Sober Island is a bird watcher's paradise. There are numerous trails, forests, and lanes to explore. Walking for 15 minutes (from the house) on one well maintained trail in particular leads to the exquisitely beautiful Pond Beach, a spectacular pebble beach along the open water. Walking south along the one small road takes one to the trail leading to the Southern most point of the island, another area of breathtaking shoreline beauty. Clam digging, and beach combing for shells, driftwood, stones, and lobster trap floats are wonderful ways to spend an afternoon.
Taylor Head Provincial Park: Extending out 4 miles into the Atlantic Ocean like a great crooked finger, Taylor Head Provincial Park has over 10 miles of unspoiled coastline, secluded white sand beaches, and hiking trails. This rugged shoreline offers many interesting geological formations, a wide variety of biological habitats, and diversity of wildlife. Many visitors regard the Taylor Head Provincial Park's 15 kms of hiking trails to be among the most outstanding coastal trail systems on North America's eastern sea coast. Wildlife viewers will enjoy the occasional sightings of dolphins, seals, and pilot whales along the shoreline of Taylor Head.
