The Octagon Cottage: Canada Select 4-star
The Octagon cottage is an exposed post-and-beam construction with mortise and tenon joinery. It is a barrier free design and wheelchair friendly. Full length windows on two sides provide a panoramic view of the Gulf. There is a full kitchen with dining area, a large living room, one large bedroom with a split-king bed, a three piece bath with roll-in-shower, (no tub), a circular stair leading to the observation tower. It is furnished with an electric fireplace, sofa, two comfortable chairs, rocking chair, coffee table, satellite TV, DVD player, and kitchen table and chairs. The observation tower has a bench type table with two high barstools. The living room and bedroom floors are locally grown larch wood with ceramic tile in the bathroom and congoleum in the kitchen. There is a wrap-around deck on five sides of the building, as well as a separate deck on the cliff's edge overlooking Chimney Corner Beach and Margaree Island. Wireless internet service provided.

One of the unique features of this cottage is its wheelchair friendly design. The open concept between the kitchen, dining area, and living room allows for full wheelchair mobility. The single floor design and wide hallway provide easy access from the bedroom to all ground floor living spaces. All light switches are specified height from the floor, as is the bedroom thermostat for the electric heat.

Cliff Cottage: Canada Select 4-star
The Cliff cottage is a modern one bedroom cottage nestled in a
clearing of spruce trees, thirty feet from the edge of a cliff which drops 50' straight down to the rocks below. It is complete with a queen bed, full four piece bath, full kitchen, living room, dining nook, deck on two sides, gas BBQ, telephone and satellite TV. This setting provides complete privacy and solitude. There is a separate 8' X 10' deck on the edge of the cliff for viewing the Gulf in its many moods, from crashing waves to calm, golden, sunsets.

The Studio Cottage: Canada Select 4-star
The Studio Cottage is a modern A-frame structure situated in the clearing with the main building. It has a cathedral ceiling in one end and kitchen area, small fridge, and full, four piece bath in the other end. It contains a queen- size bed, comfortable chairs, dining area, phone, satellite TV, deck and gas BBQ. There is a view of the Gulf and a portion of the beach from the living area. There is a separate, private, deck located up on the cliff that offers a view of the Gulf and the colourful sunsets. Visitors in the month of June can enjoy the added attraction of lobster boats setting their traps in our cove.

Your hosts are retired educators who are actively involved in local, regional and provincial tourism organizations. Our eighteen years of superb hospitality and service guarantee an enjoyable experience.

The goal of the cottage experience is good, old-fashioned Cape Breton hospitality where we welcome you to our property. We are traditional, not commercial. Our guests are family, not clients.

The goal of the cottages is privacy and tranquility while perched at the edge of fifty foot cliffs. The stressed-out and burnt-out can recharge, and the vacationer can just vegetate. Three-days in a cottage will give you a "taste," but it takes a minimum of a week to "savour" Cape Breton.

The washer and dryer are in a separate laundry building for the cottage guests only. The cottages are fully equipped. You only need bring a stack of books and your favourite CDs. Each cottage has its own private telephone and wireless internet.

Relaxing day trips from Chimney Corner could take you to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Alexander Graham Bell Museum, Fortress Louisbourg, Miners Museum, Highland Village, Gaelic College and home in time for evening tea. Boat tours, sand beaches, whale watching, canoeing, golfing, fishing (trout, salmon, deep sea), all are within a short drive.

Three night minimum. Off-season by reservation. One-third deposit with all rentals. The breakfast option is an additional $25 per couple, per night. Cancellation Policy: 3 weeks. There is a $50 administrative fee with all cancellations We accept major credit cards, debit cards, checks, money orders, and cash.

Coastal Cottages at Chimney Corner, Cape Breton Island

Jan and Bob Wheeler

We emigrated from upstate New York in 1964, the year we bought the "wilderness" in Chimney Corner. The first five years were spent in Halifax where Jan taught high school English and Bob completed his university education at Dalhousie. Weekends and summer vacations were spent at Chimney Corner, clearing land and pounding nails, and finally, after a period of twenty years, in 1989, the house was finished and we became permanent residents at our little cove. The B&B and cottages commenced in 1992 and we have not looked back. The B&B portion of the business was scaled back in 2008 and our efforts are primarily devoted to the cottages. The off-season is as busy as the summer, with choirs, quilting, knitting, construction, coaching, genealogy, local and provincial tourism committees, and winter catch-up reading. (VE1CYH)
