Vacation Rental Description
Heron Cove Cottage was built in 1992 to a prize-winning architectural design and has been since then the cherished retreat of its owners and their daughters. It is a fifteen hundred square foot 4-bedroom house (one bedroom closed during rentals to store personal items). Every room is lighted from at least two sides; this, with the clerestory and skylights, makes for a pleasant changing pattern of light and shade through the day.
The house incorporates a bit of British Columbian history: the hardwood floors on the ground floor had a previous life in the gymnasium of Oakalla Gaol. The large deck (some 720 square feet overlooking the waterfront) has a table and chairs so that meals can be taken outdoors, closer to the hummingbirds, woodpeckers and butterflies which share our space. Some 250 square feet on the waterfront side is protected from all but driving rain.
Two electrical outlets make outdoor living convenient. If you like to photograph, paint, draw or write, you will find the surroundings inspirational: prize-winning photographs have been taken, and a good deal of work now in print has been written on our deck!
The cottage, on a 1.6 acre wooded property, overlooks the Strait of Georgia, on the quieter side of Galiano Island. Eagles, heron, seals are to be seen often; or you may catch a glimpse of a sea-lion, an otter, alone or with a family, and of killer-whales. The smaller creatures of the extensive intertidal zone are equally fascinating. In summer (when the rocks are not slippery) you can get a good walk either east or west of Heron Cove and be amazed at how few other people you encounter.
Galiano Island is ideal for a peaceful and quiet holiday, far from the madding crowd. But there is also plenty of activity for those who want it: kayaking, fishing, golf and so on. The golf course welcomes visitors; it is one of the recreational treasures of the island. There are many scenic walks within a short drive of the cottage, which will take you to some of the most beautiful views in the world. Bring your cameras!
If your stay is for a week, you may well be content to stay on Galiano; however, there is a regular private service to nearby Saltspring Island or you can take a B.C. ferry to the other southern Gulf Islands, to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, which is an hour and twenty minutes away via Swartz Bay, or to Vancouver, which is fifty minutes away via Tsawwassen.
Pets are welcome, providing they are house-trained, on an anti-flea program, and are never left alone in the house. When expressing interest in the property, please indicate what pets you wish to bring.

One modification of that site: Rentals in the summer months are by week or multiples of a week only, except that 6-day rentals are possible and will be pro-rated.
In the summer rentals are from Sunday to Sunday, to suit our cleaner's schedule
Heating is by electricity (baseboard heaters) and wood stove (not used in summer months).
Heron Cove is on the quieter (north) side of Galiano Island, overlooking the Georgia Strait. In the summer, when the sandstone foreshore is dry, you can walk a long way both east and west; children love to explore the intertidal pools. You will certainly want to bring a camera!

Galiano loves tourists, and while there is no theatre or night club as such, many entertainments are put on within easy driving distance from Heron Cove.
The golf course is attractive, and at Montague Harbour you can put in a kayak, enjoy a sandy beach or a forest trail hike.
