“Absolutely wonderful Riad, location, and people.”
Tripadvisor
This is the most wonderful Riad we have stayed in. Having been to Morocco 5 or six times, we have stayed in a number of places, but Riad De La Mer was by far the best for looks, location, and hospitality.
The place is beautifully decorated throughout- the bedrooms are large, sumptuous and very comfortable, the main bathroom is just stunning, and the roof terrace is a lovely place to relax and sit and watch the sun set. The place is also immaculately well kept by Saida, who also cooks a lovely breakfast for you every day.
The location is perfect- a two minute walk to the main square, the souks, the harbour or the beach.
We stayed for two weeks, the first spent with family for Christmas, and the second with friends for new year. Our friends brought their two year old with no problems, and he was happily entertained both in the Riad, and with all the local sites and beach.
Booking was simple, and Diane the owner was exceptionally helpful with all our queries
(emails from 10 different people) and with organizing our travel arrangements to and from Essaouira.
I would thoroughly recommend staying at Riad de la mer- we are planning a return trip as soon as possible.

“Room at the top in a beautiful little riad!”
Tripadvisor
We stayed in this lovely, little riad mid February and from the moment we contacted the owner to make the booking, all the arrangements from payment to being greeted by Abdul the house manager on arrival, went like a dream. We had reserved the room at the top which was accessed by a spiral staircase, good for walking off the delicious breakfast and Moroccan cuisine we sampled while in Essaouira. The room was decorated tastefully in fresh pastel colours and had its own roof top terrace which was reached by climbing a wooden ladder. Be prepared for the quirky bathroom space which added to our experience. I think some other rooms are en-suite. Great value for money as the panoramic views of the port and out over the town were breathtaking. We were able to appreciate this vista each morning as we took breakfast on a lower rooftop terrace. This was served to us by Abdul's wife who was meticulous in ensuring we had everything we needed. Other well travelled guests we spoke to who stayed in our riad seemed very happy with their accommodation too. The rooms were spotlessly clean as were the main areas. The entrance to the riad is down an alley just off the main square. Abdul met us and seemed to genuinely want us to enjoy our stay. All in all top class room for the price and we would not hesitate to stay again if visiting Essaouira.

“Magic in Morocco”
Tripadvisor
My second trip to Essouira, stayed at Riad de la Mer for a couple nights, and loved it so much I have booked the entire Riad for a week for summer 2012. Fantastic all the way down the line: Diane the owner is wonderful, responsive and accommodating. The hosts of Abdul and his wife are charming and so friendly, a pleasure to get to know! The location is great, close to the heart of the old city yet once you close the front door you are transported to a another world. the house has all the old world, unique charm that I was looking for. Beautiful antiques populate the house but do not clutter, very tasteful and artful. Amazing tile work everywhere. beautiful light permeating every room, airy and quiet. All is exceptionally clean, sheets dried in the hot sun which made me love to get into bed, wonderful smell. Every room is unique, be sure to check the well documented website to see what works best for you. I chose to room in the sky, all the way at the top which has its own private terrace - I loved it. Highly highly recommend!

“Atmospheric, spacious and brilliantly located”
Tripadvisor
We are a family of five on our first visit to Morocco and we spent a total of fifteen nights in the Riad during Ramadan. De la Mer is very well located, being just off the main square. It is spacious, clean and has some lovely little touches. There are some superb views over the port and the beds are very comfortable - a must after a day's horse riding! The housekeeper and his wife, Abdul and Saida, were discreet and incredibly helpful. You should be aware that there are stairs to negotiate - those with dodgy knees ought to nab the bedrooms on the lower floors.
The Riad does, as others have said, have a magical quality. Our party ranged from an eight year old, to teenagers and through to adults. We all loved the Riad and Essaouira and are certainly considering returning before too long.

“This is something else!”
Tripadvisor
Having stayed in the riot that is Marrakesh for three days,we travelled on to Essaouira and found calm. The Riad de la Mer is centrally situated and we were met by Abdul the manager. It is about 10 minutes from the coach station of Supr@tours. The Riad is beautiful inside and very quiet. We had booked to be on the top floor and had the bonus of a roof terrace with panoramic views of the town - and what views especially towards the sea and the islands. The rooms were clean and we really relaxed from all the stress caused by Marrakesh. It is also very reasonably priced.

“fantastic riad"
Tripadvisor
From the moment we walked in the door of this riad with the kind Abdul we felt peace coming over us. The rooms are spacy clean and very comfortable. You can feel and see that the owner has a great taste for details and the personal touch made us feel very at home away from home.
Saida cooked us a wonderful tahina with chicken lemon and olives. We all agreed that this was our best meal we had in Marocco.
Everymorning we had a wonderfull breakfast on the roofterrace with a view over the port and the atlantic. We had one regret and that is that we left too soon to go back to Marrakech where we found the people very annoying. What a difference with the calm and piecefull Essouira. Thanks again and we will definitely come back to stay in the Riad

“Wonderful European-flavor riad!”
Tripadvisor January 2012
After a so-so experience for 2 nights in Essaouira, we moved on short notice to the Riad de la Mer for our last night. Diane's prompt email communication made for an easy reservation. Abdul met us there and made sure that our stay was comfortable. We had the second floor apartment, a wonderful set of wooden-door and shuttered rooms overlooking the open terrace below, 2 bedrooms, bath and kitchen (website photos are accurate).
One bedroom was HUGE with wonderful decorations: fireplace, clothing on walls, a small table, and a nice antique mirror. The second was smaller but still not tiny. It was cold in January, but one room had a nice heater that we moved around to share. The bath was adorable with plenty of hot water; loved its open door to the walkway.
Breakfast and views on the rooftop was perfect in every way. Downstairs there is common area that includes a wonderful dining room, again intriguingly decorated and a small salon. Remaining walls and stairwells of the riad are also beautifully touched with Moroccan clothing, a very nice touch.
The Riad de la Mer is very moderately priced and has a nice European flavor to it. It is not 5-star posh, but it was very comfortable and the service was excellent! I wish we'd spent all our 3 night there! I recommend it highly!

“An absolute gem, highly recommended!”
Tripadvisor April 2012
We travelled as two couples to Essaouira and stayed for 5 nights in this gorgeous riad. From the booking process onwards, everything was smooth sailing - Diane, the riad owner, based in the UK, gave us lots of helpful information and was prompt and pleasant to deal with in booking the riad. She recommended a fab taxi driver, Abdul, who picked us up from the airport and drove us (very carefully, unlike some Moroccan drivers!) to the riad in his very cool and retro 1980's Mercedes sedan with great musical accompaniment, including Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Dire Straits and Tracy Chapman! Maybe not everyone's taste, but we loved it!
On arrival at the riad, the housekeeper (another Abdul) was there to welcome us and show us around. Both him and his wife, Saida, who prepared our breakfasts and cleaned our rooms each day, were lovely and friendly and tolerated our very poor French with much humour (and sign language!). We had booked the 3rd and 4th floor rooms as two couples and it was a perfect location - the 4th floor has its own private roof terrace and is lovely and light, with views from the bedroom windows over the port and the sea. The room on the 3rd floor has a little outdoor courtyard area with potted plants and a nice big wetroom with plenty of hot water at all times, as well as a sitting area with sofa, chairs, chess and a little table - great for the odd occasion when it's raining (which it did on one evening). Sleep quality in the 4th floor, although a lovely comfortable bed, was slightly worse than on the 3rd as you can really hear the mosque at 4am call to prayer, whereas on the 3rd floor (and I expect the lower floors) the sound is shielded somewhat and the other couple in our party on the 3rd floor had 5 nights of undisturbed sleep. Perhaps bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper! The sound of the mosque is present wherever you stay inside the medina, so it's not a problem specific to this riad (and it's not really a big deal - it's only a few minutes at 4am and anyway is part and parcel of staying in a traditional Muslim town). Downstairs the communal area and ground floor courtyard is decorated in a traditional style. Breakfast served on the terrace in the sunshine each morning was a highlight, although you have to be on your guard for raiding seagulls! The view from the terrace across the town as the sun is setting in the evening is stunning too.
The location is great - right by the main square, so easy for orientation, but set back from the bustle in a peaceful location through some archways. The beach is a 5 minute walk.
We loved our stay and highly recommend Riad de la Mer and its chilled-out atmosphere. Go there - you won't be disappointed!
