Vacation Rental Description
We offer you an ecologically sound alternative to the usual hotel or 'luxury safari' rip-offs. We are first & foremost about 'reality'. We're not stuffy, nor pretentious. We believe in giving you real value for money & a genuine experience of this country, it's culture & it's wonderful people. The 'Real Gambia' experience.
Unlike the hotels, we do not try to pass off on you any pseudo culture. We always offer you access to the real thing. Here you will easily make new friends with local people. Our manager Haruna will be your best friend & advise you about other people you meet. Even if you happen to be here on your own you'll never feel lonely, neighbours & friends of ours will look after you & keep you company.
We offer you the opportunity to live in a normal house, much like any other house in the area. Living in with the local community, amongst the people; you will not be divorced from them, as you would be enclosed in a typical hotel that looks the same anywhere on the planet. But you still have a very secure & happy environment.
We have been in business connected to West Africa since the late 80's & have been running holidays here since 1994. We have a wealth of experience & have all the right contacts to make sure you have an excellent holiday here.
We are offering you a package that allows you to have your own unique experience, exploring this country & it's culture, whilst being quietly & expertly looked after in the background.
Rooms:
Rooms face on to our bahama-grass lawns which have both shady & sunny areas for you to relax in. Windows have mosquito nets & curtains; doors have curtains & individual padlocks. Rooms have mosquito-netted double beds, pillows, sheets, blankets, built-in wardrobe & shower area.
Cultural insights:
Whilst here you will be part of the local community. As such you will gain insights into culture & tribal customs that would not be open to you if you were at one of the hotels. We get invited to naming & 'right of passage' ceremonies, weddings & to other compounds as friends, rather than as tourists. The natural friendliness of the people may overwhelm you at first. We Europeans are not used to this open-hearted warmth & generosity of spirit. You will also meet genuine 'griots' at their homes or at our place.[Jalis: the Bards or minstrels, who carry the histories of the tribes.] See 'Jalis' tab & links page on our website for more info..]
We also have 3 Apartments:
The smaller apartments have a king size bed with fitted net & en-suite facilities. The living room has a 3 piece suite plus a single bed doubling as a second sofa. Apartments have mosquito nets & bedding etc., as do all rooms.
The larger apartment has 2 double bedrooms, it's own bathroom & kitchen. The central living space could also accommodated 2 people, so this apartment can easily sleep 6 & single beds could be provided to sleep more if needed. This living space is slightly separate from the other rooms, as it's tucked away in our back yard. It is therefore a bit secluded & an excellent place to hide away for a while. It has a partial flat roof, which has excellent views over the village & to the sea with lovely cool breezes for those occasional hot, humid days.
Prices:
We charge per person, not for specific rooms. Our philosophy is to give our guests our best available rooms, whenever there is some choice, i.e. not fully booked. This means if you are a couple or single, & happen to be the only guest, we will give you the small apartment. If the small apartment is already occupied, we'll give you the best room available. However, if you are willing to pay a premium to book a certain room, we will negotiate with you. The larger apartment is for groups & larger families, but if a smaller group or family wants to book it then we will negotiate an arrangement agreeable to all.
