The city of Luxor is a place where the past lives very comfortably with the present and has so much to offer. It was originally known as Thebes and was the religious capital of Ancient Egypt. Luxor is home to the wonderfully mysterious Valley of the Kings, where the Ancient Pharaohs were laid to rest and begin their journey toward their new life in the Next World. It is also home to the beautiful and majestic Temples of Luxor and Karnak, where you can see the history of this fascinating country carved out upon the stone walls . The magnificent River Nile runs right through the centre of the city and visitors can spend an hour or so relaxing and sailing on the river in a Felucca, a traditional sailing boat used since Pharaonic times, or why not take a tour of the city in a Caleche, a brightly decorated horse drawn carriage.
Luxor has guaranteed all year round sunshine and the people are among the friendliest in the world, so why not come and visit us today.

  • Luxor is most famous for it's historical sites such as The Valley of the Kings and the Temples of Luxor and Karnak. The city is also pretty much bang in the middle of Egypt and has good transport links with the other major cities of Cairo, for the Pyramids ad Egyptian Museum, Aswan, for the High Dam and Temple of Philae and Hurghada, which is on the Red Sea and a good centre for diving and water sports. Check our website for details of organised tours in and around Luxor and to other cities within Egypt. We are also able to arrange 'Tailor-Made' tours if required.

    LUXOR
Firstly, a little history lesson for you
Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes, the great capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom, and the glorious city of the God Amon Ra. The city was regarded in the Ancient Egyptian texts as T-APT (meaning “the shrine”) and then, in a later period, the Greeks called it tea pie, which the Arabs later pronounced as Thebes. The importance of the city started as early as the 11th Dynasty by King Mento-hotep
The city of Thebes was the capital of the fourth Nome of Upper Egypt. The main local god was the God Amon Ra, who was worshipped with his wife, the Goddess Mutt, and their son, the God Khonsu, the God of the moon. Thebes was also known as “the city of the 100 gates”, sometimes being called the southern city, to distinguish it from Memphis, the early capital of the Old Kingdom.
Thebes also played a great role in expelling the invading forces of the Hyksos from Upper Egypt. From the time of the 18th Dynasty, through to the 20th Dynasty, the importance of the city had risen as the major political, religious and military capital of Ancient Egypt. Such importance faded during the Late Period, but the God Amon Ra remained the main God until the Greco-Roman period.
Modern day Luxor is a city where the past lives very comfortably amidst the present. The present day residents are immensely proud of their rich history and are always happy to share it with visitors to their city. The people of Luxor are among the friendliest in the world.

    Luxor attractions
Luxor was the religious capital of Ancient Egypt and is in it's present day life the biggest 'Open Air Museum' in the world.
It is home to the wonderfully mysterious Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of the Pharaohs, on the West Bank of the River Nile and to the magnificent Temples of Luxor and Karnak on the East Bank. Cross this beautiful river by way of the Luxor Bridge and visit King Tutankhamun in his tomb, see the huge Colossi of Memnon and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the first female Pharaoh. Drive through unspoilt green agricultural land and watch the farmers tend their fields and animals as they did in ancient times, visit one of the Alabaster workshops and see the craftsmen work this stone into statues, pots, vases etc in the traditional manner of their ancestors.
Cross back to the East Bank and the main city of Luxor and visit the beautiful and magnificent temples of Luxor and Karnak, where you will see the history of this wonderful country carved out upon the stone walls and learn of the battles the Pharaohs fought to maintain their land.
Visit the Museum of Luxor and marvel at the wonderful antiquities on display and pay your respects to the mummies of two of the ancient Pharaohs who reside there. Next visit the Museum of Mummification to learn how the Ancient Egyptians prepared their dead for their journey to the Underworld and for their daily life there.
Luxor is the city where the past lives comfortably alongside the present. Come and see this beautiful city for yourself

    Luxor shopping
After visiting Luxor for 17 years before finally moving here permanently to live in January 2008 I quickly discovered that the secret to GOOD bargain shopping is HAGGLE, HAGGLE, HAGGLE!!! If you are not prepared to 'work' a little for what you want then you are likely to pay WELL over the odds. There are some shops who display 'fixed price' but it is still worth a try to get a little more reduction although the prices in these shops are usually quite reasonable. Luxor has a big 'Tourist' Souk near to the exit gate of Luxor Temple and whatever souvenir you want, T-Shirts, Statuettes of your favourite Egyptian God, Silver and Gold jewellery, Galabeyas, scarves, perfumes and spices can be bought here but with so many shopkeepers all bidding for your trade be prepared to expect some 'hassle' and some really hard bargaining. One shop that is well worth visiting and somewhere I love to browse around is the Fair Trade Centre, near to the Souk but located on the main road opposite the exit from the Temple. The goods in this shop are all hand crafted by women from the Bedouin community and all proceeds go back to the community, it is a FIXED PRICE shop. Here you will find Pottery, Glassware, Clothing, Spices and Natural Medicines, Metalwork, leather goods etc, all very well made and very reasonably priced. If you want to see how the 'Locals' shop then venture away from the main 'tourist' route and head for Television Street, Medina Street and Manshia Street, they're easy to find.

    Luxor nightlife
Luxor is the safest place I have ever been and I have NEVER been afraid to walk around the city after dark. In the 17 years I was visiting Luxor before I came to live here I NEVER heard of any crime committed or saw any violence in the city at all and I believe it to be the most peaceful place in the world. The night life is fairly quiet but there is always somewhere to go for a drink and a dance if you wish to do so.
The most popular night spots here are Murphy's Irish Pub, where you can enjoy food and drink, music and dancing or have a game of Pool and they also show the English Premier League matches and Genesis Bar and Restaurant, which is in the Karnak area of the city, which has an indoor swimming pool. Most of the hotels have a nightly floor show, to which non-residents are welcome and some also have discos. John's Tavern at the Gaddis Hotel has Karaoke twice a week and also shows the Premier League football. All of the outdoor Coffee Shops and cafes stay open until the early hours of the morning and most serve alcohol as well as non-alcoholic beverages, the most popular being the Sinbad Gardens and the Wena Gardens, which are both directly opposite the entrance to Luxor Temple. There are also several nightspots across on the West Bank of Luxor which can be accessed by a short taxi ride across the Luxor Bridge or a trip across on the public ferry and a car the other side.
Luxor is a city that comes alive after dark and it is just so nice to take a leisurely night time walk along the main Corniche el Nile and watch the lights dance on the ripples of this beautiful river.
Whatever you like to do after dark Luxor has the place to do it.

    Luxor restaurants
Luxor has many fine restaurants and you can easily find whatever cuisine you fancy. I can only tell you about the ones I've been to and where I return time and again. For GOOD Indian food I would recommend A Taste of India in St. Joseph Street. It is owned by Russell who is originally from Stevenage and it serves the BEST Chicken Korma I've ever tasted - and I originate from Birmingham, the curry capital of England!! Russell and his partners are about to open a new Chinese Restaurant just down the road from the Indian.
John and John's International Restaurant inside the Gaddis Hotel has unarguably the biggest menu of all the restaurants and serves tasty, well cooked food in large portions at a very reasonable cost. There is also Uncle John's Pizzeria, which I've heard serves the BEST pizza's in Luxor.
For very tasty and well cooked Egyptian food served in a traditional Egyptian atmosphere head to Sofra Restaurant, located in a side street off Manshia Street, (the street that leads down to Luxor Railway Station), the restaurant is signposted from the main road. I can highly recommend the Tamiya (falafel) and Tahina bil Bakdoonis (dip), Shorbat Ads (Lentil Soup) and the Dawood Pasha (beef meatballs in a rich tomato sauce).
The Rooftop Restaurant at the St. Joseph Hotel is ideal for lunch as they serve good 'snack' meals such as burgers, omelettes, jacket potatoes, noodles etc and there is a wonderful view across the Nile to the West Bank and the mountains of the Valley of the Kings.

    Luxor day trips
There is so much to do and see in and around Luxor and it is easier and CHEAPER to book excursions and trips once you arrive in the city. Trips to the West Bank sites (Valley of the Kings, Colossi of Memnon, Temple of Hatshepsut etc) usually last half a day and generally start early in the morning, VERY early in the Summer months to avoid being out in the heat of the midday sun. The same applies to a tour of the Temples of Luxor and Karnak on the East Bank as there is so much to see and learn.
As Luxor is pretty much right in the centre of Egypt it is fairly easy to get to the other major cities with historical sites, Cairo and Alexandria to the North and Dendera, Abydos, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan and Abu Simbel to the South. Luxor has good transport links with all of these cities, although it is usually advisable to book an overnight stay in Cairo and Aswan to ensure that you get to see everything.
The best way to see all of the sites and monuments South of Luxor is to go on a Nile Cruise. Check out the Live Luxor Tours page on our website at www.liveluxor.com or our page on Facebook for great value guided tours in and around Luxor or further afield.
