Being a relatively secluded but classy town, Göcek is a unique jewel of Turkey. With easy access by land, sea and air Göcek nestles in a natural harbour protected by the small islands off shore. Being only 20 minutes from Dalaman International airport through the Göcek Tunnel (opened 2006) you can relax into your holiday almost immediately after arriving in Turkey. Walk along the promenade, with coastal hills rising all around you. On one side masts and bowsprits of all kinds and on the other elegant waterfront dining in the numerous restaurants and bistros. Also in the town centre are small supermarkets and grocery shops mingling with smart boutiques and souvenir shops supplying holiday makers and locals alike. Göcek bay is populated with a family of 12 picturesque islands. Many have sandy beaches, some with delightful restaurants and some are historically significant, you could visit Cleopatra’s Island, said to have been a gift from Mark Anthony. The ruins of her 'Hamam' – Turkish Bath- are still to be found there and, indeed, bathed in.
Within easy driving distance of Göcek are:
Ölü Deniz: one of the most picturesque places in Turkey combining clear, warm, turquoise waters with a stunning backdrop of the Babadag Mountains. Kayaköy- since the population exchange in 1923 the 3,000 deserted homes and churches have fallen into disrepair and is now known as the 'ghost town'. Why not try a private rental villa in Olu Deniz?
Dalyancruise: through the reed beds where the 'African Queen' was filmed, past ancient rock tombs on the way to unspoilt Iztuzu beach home of endangered loggerhead turtles.
Tlos and Saklikent: visit the ancient city of Tlos with its ruined theatre and health centre and stunning views of the snow capped (in Spring) Taurus Mountains from the Ottoman castle. Saklikent is Europe's second longest gorge at 17kms. It is about 3m wide between rocks 300m high, part of the gorge can be walked.
Fethiye: the huge Tuesday market where you can experience sights, sounds and smells and brush up on your bargaining skills. Also visit the rock tomb of Amyntas dating back to 350BC. There's some great self catering apartments in Fethiye.
Xanthos: the world famous archealogical site with large ruins and mosaics, some of which are in the British Museum.
Göcek is also well-placed to serve as a base from which to explore many of Turkey's most popular places and further a field a one hour internal flight brings you to Istanbul, the only city in the World set on two continents. Another one hour flight from Istanbul brings you to Cappadocia with its haunting and surreal landscapes.
Göcek hosts two world renowned Regattas in May and November attracting thousands of yachtsmen from all over the World. Yachts and Gulets can be hired from the marinas.
