About Granada:

Granada, Nicaragua is the oldest city in the Americas, founded in 1524. It is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua, the tenth largest fresh water lake in the world.
The city has maintained its colonial architecture, and has at its center a shady large central plaza. A large cathedral and the Archbishop's home and church administration building border part of the eastern side of the Central Park.
Stretching to the east from the Park is Avenida La Calzada, a wide boulevard stretching toward the Lake, with restaurants, bars, and outdoor tables and chairs. Granada is a walking city, with numerous restaurants, a health club, upscale supermarket, shops and internet locations close by.

A taxi anywhere in the city is about 50 cents U.S. Within 25 minutes or less are: to the south, the Mombacho Volcano, with hiking trails near the summit and two zip lines (canopy tours);to the west, the Laguna de Apoyo volcanic lake with small resorts or suitable for a day trip; the ceramics village of San Juan del Oriente; the small town of Catarina with shops and a high overlook (mirador) at the top of Laguna de Apoyo yielding an aerial view of the Lake and Granada; the Masaya Volcano, where one may drive right up to the lip of this active volcano; the Masaya Artisan's Market; and the Granada Isletas, over 350 small islands in Lake Nicaragua which can be toured by boat, 10 minutes to the docks from the Central Park. The Pacific Ocean beaches are a bit more than one hour to the west.

The modern Managua International Airport is one hour away on good roads, and serviced by Continetnal, Delta, American, Spirit, Copa, and Taca airlines.
