Prince Edward County is a peninsula on the north shore of Lake Ontario situated halfway between Toronto and Ottawa – part of the Quinte tourism area. Because of its unique location off the beaten path, Prince Edward has become a haven for city dwellers looking for a serene getaway without having to travel all day to get there. The Sandbanks beach is the feature for which the region receives the most attention, and watersport rentals are available there, but “The County” is also becoming a centre for those interested in culinary excellence. In addition to being Ontario’s newest wine region, there is a plethora of fine dining experiences available.
Hiking and bicycling adventurers will delight in the routes through the countryside overlooking the water, or in pastoral settings and wooded areas. The County’s business and shopping centre is Picton, built on a bay with a busy yacht club and scenic ferry crossing. The Quinte area is a fishing paradise with many small hamlets from which to dock your own or rent a boat.
The Prince Edward County website www.pec.on.ca has an up to date listing of festivals that take place throughout the year including Maple in the County; Studio Tour; Jazz Festival; Taste: A Celebration of Regional Cuisine; Taste the County; Pumpkinfest; P.E. County Marathon; among many, many others. Picton Golf and Country Club’s well-maintained public 18 hole course is situated on a bluff overlooking Picton Bay. Several other excellent courses are available within a short distance.
Modern grocery stores, hardware and building centres abound but countless days may be spent browsing the boutiques and shops sprinkled throughout the villages of Prince Edward County, a three hour drive from airports in Toronto, Ottawa, or Montreal.
