The Gulf of Thailand is one of the most beautiful oceans in the world. Situated is a tropical zone, this large stretch of water is blessed with warm water, beautiful white sandy beaches and abundant corals and marine life.
The Koh Samui area consists of three main islands and many smaller islands, situated close to the south-eastern coast of Thailand. It is accessible by air through one of the most beautiful airports in the world, the international airport in Koh Samui. Flights are available to Koh Samui form many other cities in Thailand, as well as international flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. There are also many forms of transport in Thailand, by land/boat, that mean you can also get to these islands.
The main islands consist of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, all of which have other smaller islands, some deserted, nearby to these main centres of tourism.
Koh Samui is the largest of these islands and the most developed. Now the host of many luxury resorts and villa developments, Koh Samui offers some of the best 5* accommodation in Asia. There are two main tourist destinations Chaweng and Lamai, great for nightlife, supported by a host of smaller beachfront centres around the island, many within easy reach of these nightspots. The island is accessed by a main ring road which goes around the island’s perimeter close to the beaches, while the central areas of Koh Samui and largely undeveloped rainforest. Koh Samui has maintained its charm despite the growth it has seen in tourism, and offers one of the most friendly holiday destination in the ‘land of smiles’.
Koh Phangan in the latest island to undergo a major transition in terms of development. Koh Phangan replaced Koh Samui as the main destination for backpackers and those looking for an idyllic tropical location at inexpensive prices. It is well known for being the home of the popular ‘full moon’ parties frequented by many party goers. Koh Phangan still has plenty of remote beaches but access around the island is more limited than its bigger neighbour Koh Samui, just a short distance away.
The third main island is Koh Tao, situated about 90 minutes away from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan by boat. Much smaller than is neighbours, Koh Tao has become the centre for Scuba Diving in the Gulf of Thailand. Accommodation is available on the island although it is more limited here than the other two destinations. It has a more laid back lifestyle and simpler accommodation, and is sometimes used as a second destination for those visiting this region.
The Koh Samui area also has a number of smaller islands including the Angthong National Marine Park. There are many areas that have a rich diversity of nature, supported by a well established tourist industry.
The area now provides a new and exciting villa rental destination for those looking for something a little different, encompassing a tropical living lifestyle, great friendly service in one of the most idyllic locations in the world.
