About Cape Verde Islands:

The Cape Verde Islands are a group of islands located about 500 kilometres from the west of Africa. There are 10 main islands: Sao Nicolau, Sao Vicente, Santiago, Santa Luzia, Sal, Boa Vista, Brave, Fogo and Maio as well as several islets.

These islands were largely uninhabited until about the 1460’s when the Portuguese colonised it. They then became a centre for the slave trade as well as a re-supply stop for transatlantic vessels. The marriage of slaves and free Europeans created a mix of cultures and the Creole dialect.

In the early years the unpredictable rainfall made life tough on the islands and the emigration of many of the national means that there are a larger proportion of people claiming Cape Verdean ancestry outside of the islands than there are living on the islands.

For many years these islands remained largely unheard of but over time and since independence in 1975 the tourist trade has slowly built. Now these little jewels in the Atlantic are becoming a popular and sought after destination for many a traveller.

It is easy to see why too. The climate, year round, is conducive to a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The prevailing winds mean that the islands to not become unbearably hot and the ocean remains within comfortable bounds for swimming.

There is a sumptuous feast awaiting anybody who deigns to travel here with shellfish of all varieties and sizes on the menu. There are dozens of species of fish readily available to get you taste buds tingling.

It is also the stop of for some migratory whales as well as killer whales and dolphin. Also many turtles lay their eggs on the wide open beaches here and so they continually thrive in this area.

With long rolling beaches there is plenty of opportunity for water sports of all types and especially wind surfing.

These islands really are worth a visit so for your next vacation rental with the Vacationrentalpeople.com why not visit the Cape Verde Islands?
