Maalaea is located in central Maui, on the south shore. “MAH ah LAY yuh” is close to the correct pronunciation.
It is about one-half hour from the Kahului [KAH who LOO ee] airport, which is on the north shore. In the airport area, the town of Kahului offers several grocery and discount stores, chemists as well as restaurants. For late arrivals, the Safeway grocery store is open 24 hours as is a Denny’s restaurant.
The marina at Maalaea bay offers many kinds of excursions, including snorkeling safaris, dinner cruises and sport fishing. Humpback whales migrate to the Maalaea ocean waters to give birth to calves in the winter, and can be seen just offshore December thru early March. The marina has two fine restaurants, several cafes, and a world class aquarium, the Maui Ocean Experience.
The condominium complexes are on Haouli street, which is quiet since it is not a through street, Each condo has a parking lot adjacent to the street, and all are directly on the water, The last three have beachfront.
By car, Kehei [KEY hay] is about 15 minutes to the east; a lively town with many water activities, night life and public beaches.
Lahaina, in historic west Maui is about 45 minutes away, adjacent to the hotel areas of Napili and Kaanapali. These areas have excellent restaurants, fine artwork and many tourist activities, including parasailing, shopping and actual submarine voyages.
The eclectic village of Paia [pie EE ah] is 40 minutes away, ten minutes east of Kahului on the north shore. Next is the world famous Hookipa [Hoe ah Key pah] surfing area, and the beginning of the day trip on the Road to Hana with thirty miles of scenic grandure and beautiful waterfalls, leading to Hana, “the heart of old Hawaii”.
