Captiva is a tropical island located about four miles off the coast of Ft. Myers, Florida and just off the northern tip of Sanibel Island. It’s a pleasant 55 minute drive from new Ft Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), a 2.5 hours from Miami International Airport (MIA), 3 hours from Tampa International (TPA) or St Pete/ Clearwater (PIE), or 4 hours from Orlando International (MCO). Many start their trip with a visit to the Orlando Disney World and Disney Theme Parks and finish with an easy drive to Captiva Island. Please do not confuse Captiva with North Captiva, which is only accessible by boat.
The Island looks more Caribbean than Florida, with colorful and lush tropical foliage, wonderful tropical birds, and no high rises or fast food chains. The local restaurants are wonderful and rich with Island charm. The Island’s structures, beach and tropical palm trees are in wonderful condition and show no clue that any storm has passed by in recent years. The sugar sand beaches are all natural and not crowded, though all beach areas are open to the public. Shelling is fantastic, surf fishing is very popular, and the gentle slope of the beach allows safe and easy swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.
A car is optional to enjoy the many activities on Captiva, as most everything is accessible by foot, bicycle, or golf cart. A limo from the airport is a good alternative to a rental car. Captiva has two convenience stores in the village for quick purchases.
On Captiva you'll enjoy nature, sunset or lunch cruises to other Islands, like Cabbage Key or Useppa and enjoy fishing or pleasure boat rentals
Use bicycles for added enjoyment of Captiva and Sanibel's extensive bike paths. You can even bike or drive through the Ding Darling Nature Preserve, a must see for wild life viewing.
Also available in Captiva's charming village are parasailing, golf carts, scooter coupes, in-line skates and JetSki .
Golf is available at your choice of two 18-hole courses, the Dunes and Beachview, just 20 minutes away on nearby Sanibel Island. Shelling is wonderful on our islands, so there's even the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum to visit, and it's popular for all ages. You may wish to visit Sanibel's BigArts Performing Arts Center for concerts and stage performances. In Ft. Myers is the Edison & Ford Estates offering a look at their fabulous winter homes and botanical gardens.
Captiva is very popular all year long, with only a few weeks in the fall that can be considered "off season", and there are a limited number of rental houses available. Captiva is usually booked heavier than Sanibel, as Sanibel houses rent only monthly, while Captiva house rentals are weekly.
