The coastline between St Abbs Head in Berwickshire and Amble in Northumberland is, without doubt, one of the finest in Britain, the northernmost Berwickshire region being characterised by high cliffs and sandy coves, contrasting strongly with the flatter, more gentle Northumbrian coast. Along its entire length, miles of sandy beaches fringed by extensive sand dunes, high cliffs and rocky outcrops, secluded bays and tiny harbours combine to make this an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Positioned along this stunning coastline are the magnificent castles of Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne, just some of the many in Northumbria, which has more than any other part of Britain, a testimony to the turbulent history of the region, which was the scene of frequent armed conflict over several centuries.
The entire coastal region is easily accessible on quiet, traffic free roads which link at frequent intervals with the A1 trunk road, and apart from its unique scenery and historic and religious heritage, the area has several fine golf courses and numerous bird sanctuaries and nature reserves, perhaps the most notable being the Farne Islands. A warm welcome awaits the visitor at the numerous tea rooms, restaurants and pubs in the area, many of which have menus including local sea food and other regional specialities.
