This region of Spain is situated in the Mediterranean Sea to the south of Barcelona and east of Valencia. It is made up of four islands: Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Tourism has been the main industry in these parts for time immemorial. These Balearic islands do have something for everyone with miles and miles of sandy beaches, beautiful countryside, fantastic food and a lively and diverse nightlife. It has been a favourite destination for British holidaymakers wanting to rent villas, in particular, for many years due to the wealth of cheap charter flights from the UK.
Menorca is an interesting place to visit and with many distinct influences on its culture. Over the years there have been any number of occupiers: British, French, Spanish, Catalan and Moorish and these are all reflected in its culture and architecture. It has not been so affected by mass tourism as some of the other Balearics and so has a distinctly more relaxing air about it. Whilst there is some influence from the mass tourist industry it is usually in distinct areas and caters more for the family. The island has plenty of beautiful beaches to lap up the sun in a luxury holiday villa or vacation rental. Take a step back in time and visit Ciutadella and take a walk through some of its pretty winding streets and visit its pretty port. Take a cycle ride or go scuba diving or go for a boat ride, there’s plenty to do.
Mallorca (or Majorca) is the largest of the Balearic Islands and over the years has been one of the main attractions for holidaymakers from all over. This Baleraic island is absolutely littered with fantastic beaches and holiday villas all round and is an ideal place to come and enjoy the sun and the sand. There is a full compliment of waters sports available for the more active holidaymaker with, seemingly, new ones being invented all the time. There is a fantastic range of nightlife to select from with numerous bars, restaurants and clubs. The capital Palma is very sophisticated and has many shops ranging from luxury goods to local corner shops. The cathedral here is well worth a visit as is the old town with its windy streets and the port where the ferries from the mainland dock, as well as some spectacular yachts. Perhaps take a visit to Deia, home of the poet Robert Graves for many years, which now has attracted a rich and famous population.
Ibiza is now known as the party island and clubbers from all over Europe travel here to enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle taking in the clubs where famous name DJ’s are constantly playing. However there is another side to Ibiza and to get away from it all head to its interior or north coast which are altogether a million miles away from the partying elsewhere. The scenery is beautiful and the people very friendly and it provides for a very relaxing holiday or vacation rental.
Formentera just a few miles across the water from Ibiza is much smaller and flatter than its sister island and can be travelled quite easily by bicycle. It is quite a popular day trip for people staying on Ibiza but increasingly travellers will book the limited number of places to stay here and make it their home for their holiday.
The Balearics offer a fantastic breadth of things to do and see and make for a wonderful holiday or vacation rental.
