Rocamadour - the famous 'city in the cliff' - is one of France's prime getaway locations, with it being France's second-most visited site after Mount St. Michael in Normandy. The stunning site of the city set into the cliff in a gorge above a tributary of the River Dordogne has attracted pilgrims to the site for centuries. Renting a wonderful short term farmhouse in Rocamadour is a great way to explore this mythic city. According to legend, the city was founded by St. Amadour, who traveled to the location to become a hermit after the death of his wife. Since then it has become destination of many pilgrims and travelers, visiting the many religious sites that have appeared in Rocamadour. Chief amongst these is the crypt of St. Amadour himself, built into the rock. The Chapelle Notre Dame (Our Lady's Chapel) features a famous Black Madonna, a 12th Century representation of the Virgin Mary and the baby Jesus. Visitors to Rocamadour often come to light candles and pray to the Madonna. There's also the Great Staircase, with it's 233 stairs that pilgrims traditionally climbed on their knees. Mordern day visitors thankfully have the option of an escalator, but there's nothing stopping you from using the traditional method! When you find your rental home in Rocamadour, you can take the time out to sample the famous Rocamadour cheese, a young goats cheese which is the local delicacy. There are other places of interest to see and stay in the area, such as the 16th Century village of agnac-sur-Cere, where you might try a short term rental Gite. There's also the village of Frayssinet le Gourdonnais located near the Quercy National Park, which has short term rental Gites that you also might enjoy!
