The town of Falaise, now bears little resemblance to its ruined state seventy years ago; central stage of the Battle of Normandy in 1944, Falaise suffered tremendous damage in the wartime conflict, but has since been restored and rebuilt beyond recognition.
Falaise is also known as the place where William the Conqueror, or William the Bastard (an illegitimate child) was born and lived much of his life. The castle where he was born in1027 can be visited, and has been extensively restored in recent years.
Whether, like many, you are visiting Falaise to tour the World War II battlefields, or are simply looking to experience the culture of this, perhaps overlooked Normandy town, a private vacation home in Falaise makes for an excellent base, especially when considering the fairly limited options when it comes to hotels (only two).
Be sure to visit the War Museum, whose displays commemorate the heavy bombing of this town, and the 350 civilians tragically killed, when unfortunately the town stood in the path of the allies progress in Normandy in 1944.
For a fair-sized town, Falaise isn't often overcrowded with visitors and there's every chance you might wish to visit briefly from another town nearby. A rental apartment or cottage in close by Bayeux makes for a great base for exploring Calvados, as does a holiday home in Deauville, where you can enjoy this renowned play town of the French coast, then take a relaxed trip out to the smaller towns at your leisure.
