About Saint-Jean-du-Gard:

Saint-Jean-du-Gard is an unspoiled traditional country French town ideally located between the Mediterranean coastline and the Cevennes Mountains in the southern French countryside. The main street is closed on Tuesday morning for “market day” ending in a large open-air market building next to the river. Saint-Jean-du-Gard has all the essentials (including a super market, post office, a few bakeries, and a dozen or so restaurant and hotels) but is small enough that you can enjoy the old-world way of daily life with 3 hours off at lunch time and a local game of Boules being played by the elder in the town square every Saturday.

Activities:
Being in France food and wine is important; Saint-Jean-du-Gard takes their food seriously with wonderful 3-course meals at reasonable prices in many of the local restaurants and cafes. Saint-Jean-du-Gard has lots of outdoor sports and activities. In the summer you will find sun bathers spotted along the Gardon (river). Just north in the town of Florac there are many kayak and canoeing rental companies and to the south you will find wild horses and flamingos along the Mediterranean. You can find more information about the local area at: http://causses-cevennes.com/defaultUK.htm

Site seeing:
There are lots of museums and attractions in the area but two that should not be missed include the steam train and the Pont du Gard. The steam train starts in Saint-Jean-du-Gard and winds through the hills and coutryside to arrive 40 minutes later in the town of Anduze. It is an adventure kids and adults will enjoy. The Pont du Gard is an old roman aqueduct that is breathtaking and enormous. You can help but to wonder “how did they build this some many year ago?”

Location:
Saint-Jean-du-Gard is located in the eastern part of Languedoc-Roussillon region just west of Provence in the department of the Gard. There are many other local towns worth exploring less than an hour away. Two of my favorites are Anduze (with a local market on Thursday) and Uzes (with a local market on Saturday). You also are well located to explore some of the larger cities in the area including: Aix-en-Provence , Avignon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nîmes. Any of these towns would make for a wonderful day trip and about 1-2 hours by car.

Getting there:
For UK guest: Ryan air offer low cost air flights to Nimes and Saint-Jean-du-Gard is about 45 minutes car ride away (see: http://www.ryanair.com)
For US guest: it is recommended to fly into Paris and take the TGV fast train to Avignon (train takes 3 hours from Paris then 90 minute car ride) or Nimes (train takes 3 hours 30 minutes from Paris then 45 minute car ride). For TGV fast train tickets see: www.raileurope.com)
