Koh Phangan replaced Koh Samui as the main destination for backpackers and those looking for an idyllic tropical location at inexpensive prices. It is well known for being the home of the popular 'full moon' parties frequented by many party goers. Koh Phangan still has plenty of remote beaches but access around the island is more limited than its bigger neighbour Koh Samui, just a short distance away. The third main island is Koh Tao, situated about 90 minutes away from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan by boat. Much smaller than is neighbours, Koh Tao has become the centre for Scuba Diving in the Gulf of Thailand. It has a more laid back lifestyle and simpler accommodation, and is sometimes used as a second destination for those visiting this region.

The Koh Samui area also has a number of smaller islands including the Angthong National Marine Park. There are many areas that have a rich diversity of nature, supported by a well established tourist industry.
