Myrtos is a small seaside village on the southern coast of Crete.It is situated amid orange and olive groves and in the spring the smell of orange and lemon blossoms waft out over the sea. Myrtos used to be a haven for seamen and pirates because the weather is always mild and the sea is calm even when the wind is blowing hard and the waves are rough in nearby Ierapetra. Today pirates do not visit the beach of Myrtos any more, neither do seamen. Times have changed. Yet Myrtos remains a heaven of beauty, standing out from all the plastic greenhouses of the intensive produce agriculture round about. Today it is a heaven for tourists. It is a natural pocket, well provided with hotels and services, yet still a rural village in the middle of a predominantly agricultural area where the visitor can enjoy the sun and the sea, good food and wine while at the same time, he can meet local people and get to know local customs. Apart from the natural beauty Myrtos has to offer the urban weary tourist, it is also extremely rich in history. The site of one of the oldest protominoan ruins ever found in Crete is to be found on a hill-top overlooking the village. It was excavated, not so many years ago, by a team of British archeologists. Ruins of more “modern” civilizations can also be found such as the remains of Roman baths overlooking the beach. Myrtos seems to have been popular as a seaside resort over the ages and if the Romans felt it was good enough for their summer holidays, should we decide to settle for anything less? Myrtos, after all, has a character of its own.
