It has long been fought over and has a history of occupation dating back as far as anybody knows - although these days it is very peaceful and an ideal place to enjoy renting a holiday villa or apartment. The ancient Greeks occupied it for a long time but it has also been occupied by what is modern day Italy. The Pisans ruled over it for a period that was deemed a time of great cultural and artistic growth. It was also ruled by the Genovese for a period before finally being ruled from France.
