About Eymet:

Founded in 1270 as a bastide town under Alphonse de Poitiers, there are
traces of occupation in Eymet dating back to the Bronze Age (on show at the
Chateau Museum), with subsequent visits from the Vandals, Visigoths and
Vikings, no doubt due to the strategic position along the Dropt river
valley.

There is also evidence such as roads and bridges which suggest Roman
occupation.

Like all bastides it was built on a general plan with high
encircling walls and towers with the streets laid out in a grid pattern it
also had a fortified castle, remnants are still visible today.

Other bastide villages nearby which came under the same fiefdom include
Castillonnes, Villereal and Miramont.

In much more recent times Eymet has become famous for various festivals
including the Wine and Oyster Fair and the Medieval Fair in August.
