About Tunisia:

Tunisia is truly an African Mediterranean jewel. It has miles and miles of beautiful beaches with white sands stretching as far as the eye can see. It has a wonderful year round climate and as it has a well established tourist industry can offer even the least well travelled person a sense of security and adventure.

It is a fascinating place nestled on the north coast of Africa between Algeria and Libya. There has been a fair bit of European influence and was determined by the French until 1956. Then President Habib Bourghiba took over and established a one party state. He suppressed Islamic fundamentalism and promoted the rights of women. Arabic is the main language but French is still spoken widely and one can feel the eclectic mix of European and Arab cultures.

There really are a plethora of things to do and see in Tunisia. With all the wonderful beaches it is hardly surprising that watersports can play a huge part in your holiday or vacation. Whether it is something active you are after such as windsurfing or something more serene like scuba diving, Tunisia will have something to offer. Take an excursion on a boat to explore the coastline or just laze the days away soaking up the warm North African sun.

All along the coast are fantastic resort towns such as Tabarka, Sousse, Nabeul, Monastir, Djerba and Hammamet. These wonderful resort towns offer even the most sophisticated traveller a luxurious, relaxed existence. The hotels and restaurants offer the finest in cuisine, especially for fish livers, but also to suit all tastes. Although Tunisia is a predominantly a Muslim country there is a more relaxed attitude towards Western lifestyles than in most Muslim countries and to that end alcohol is available in most hotels and restaurants.

The Tunisian history is rich in culture and there are so many sights to be seen. Ruins are nestled everywhere and the influences of Roman, Berber, Arab and Phoenician culture can be seen all about. Some of the best preserved Roman architecture can be seen all about. The author actually remembers seeing his first concert, the wonderful Ray Charles, in a Roman amphi-theatre some 30 years ago!!

A must for visitor is a trip out into the sahara desert. Stay in grass huts in an oasis in the middle of seemingly nowhere. Or visit the troglodyte underground cave houses in the village of Matmata. Some of the famed Star Wars films were filmed in the Tunisian Sahara here and in the oasis village of Tozeur. So one can literally take a stroll through the home of Luke Skywalker.

One can visit national parks or spas, go on treks or laze by the beach or even take a camel ride.

Tunisia is a truly fantastic place to visit and has many well established, modern, sophisticated resorts whilst retaining the charm of a different way of life. The beautiful town of Sidi Bou Said is a must with its white houses with blue doors and frames nestling gently against an azure blue sky.
