Megeve as a ski resort dates back to 1913 and Baronne Neomie de Rothschild built the first hotel in 1921 after becoming disenchanted with St Mauritz. Since then it has attracted the rich and famous and is one of France's premier ski resorts.
Megeve is open all year round and is a perfect location for an active or relaxing holiday whatever the season. The picturesque pedestrian area is centred on a thirteenth century cobbled square with a Baroque church and horse drawn taxis completing the timeless atmosphere.
In the winter there are 450km of Alpine skiing with 113 lifts, plus several Nordic ski areas as well as many delightful snowshoe and walking trails to tucked away restaurants. There is also an indoor and an outdoor ice rink plus the sports centre if you're still feeling energetic.
During the summer Megeve is an Alpine retreat with activities to suit all ages whether you are looking for an adrenalin packed trip or peace and quiet. For an action packed week why not try canyoning, climbing, white water rafting, the summer luge, a tree top adventure, plus tennis, swimming, golf, riding, walking and mountain biking. Lifts are open from mid June to Mid September (pedestrians and mountain bikes) so you can take advantage and really enjoy the spectacular views and interesting trails.
For those who prefer the high life you can take light aircraft flights over Mont Blanc, parapente or take hot air balloon flight all from within 10 minutes of the centre of Megeve then relax in one of the many bars such as the jazz club then on to one of the night clubs or the casino.
For a relaxing trip be pampered in one of the local spas, shop in the delightful boutiques, enjoy the sunshine and cafe society on a terrace of one of the many bars, and sample some of the restaurants, with nearly 200 to choose from you are certain to find somewhere to suit your taste from Michelin starred to modestly priced.
Sample the local history with a trip to the museum, a tour of the baroque churches or visit a cheese factory.
There is a great sports centre that hosts some world class events, the facilities include an indoor ice-rink, two indoor pools, two outdoor pools one Olympic sized and the one with water slides plus a large lawned area for sunbathing and picnics, plus sauna-hammam, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, climbing wall, gym, ping pong, trampolining and archery.
There are many and varied cultural events throughout the year including a jazz festival, snow polo, vintage car race, ballroom dancing (French Open), World Cup ski race to mention but a few.
Geneva and Annecy are just over an hour away and Italy an a hour and half making Megeve an ideal base to see some of the best of Europe.
