Picardy is often given the respectful tag of providing the origins for what we now know as France. It was here that Clovis made Soissons the first capital of the Franks in 486. This region became the first in France and it was the beginning of a proud and durable heritage.
The rich history of this region is everywhere and remembered with pride. William the Conqeuror sailed from Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme and the battle of Crecy was fought in this region. In more recent times the Battle of the Somme was fought here during World War I and is remembered for the huge loss of life that occurred. The signing of the end of that war took place here, as did the surrender of the French to the Nazis and Hitler during the Second World War.
With so much history it is hardly surprising that the architecture of the region is so enthralling with all sorts of reminders of bygone eras. Chateaux are literally everywhere and waiting to be visited. The relaxing and peaceful atmosphere of the region as well as the colours and light has long made it a favourite with artists and Degas was often a visitor.
There is a distinctive rural feel to most of Picardy and so it is ideal for a relaxing holiday or vacation rental. The countryside is wonderful for just meandering through with soft wooded areas and rolling pastures. There are pretty fishing village along the Somme estuary and wonderful little restaurant that provide a high standard of cuisine. There is plenty of opportunity for water sports of all kinds with the rivers and canals that criss-cross the area and also horse riding is very popular here. In fact one of the towns, Chantilly, is the horseracing capital of France and there are literally thousands of horses trained here.
