Within this region is
Paris, one of the most famous cities in the world. There is no other city quite like Paris. It is famed as the city of lovers and it is very easy to see why. It offers so much to see and do and the sights are so breath- taking they stun the senses and stir one’s emotions. From the famous
Eiffel Tower in all its majesty to the Notre-Dame covered, as it is, in gothic carvings you will simply be stunned at what is on display here. Take a ride down the Seine on one of the Bateaux Mouche in the evening and feel romance flow through your veins. Walk up to the Sacre Coeur basilica in Montmartre and take in the awesome views of Paris. Turn and feat your eyes on the basilica itself and imagine all the things it has seen while it has been stood on this site. Its foundation stone was laid in 1875 and it’s built in a Romanesque – Byzantine style. Its white architecture is simply stunning and it remains one of the most heart stirring sites in Paris and probably the world! The hill of Monmartre on which it is built is home to many winding streets and the Place du Tertre where you can stop and have your portrait painted by one of the many artists or maybe grab a crepe or pop into one of the many restaurants and maybe witness some live music while you eat! This area is also home to the Dali Museum and none other than the Moulin Rouge – all this in one little district.
But Paris also has so much more. It is one of the world’s favourite artistic centres and is home to so many fine galleries and museums, including the Louvre and the Musee D’Orsay or Orsay Museum. There is a wonderful café culture here and some of the finest restaurants in the world with sumptuous French cuisine and fine wines. It is also a fashion capital and here you can pick up some wonderful
French chic in their fabulous boutiques. Wander down the tiny streets of the Latin Quarter and get lost for a while in your thoughts before moving on and taking a stroll along one of the mighty Boulevards with their imposing regal architecture.
Ile de France is about much more than just Paris though. Just a short journey from the centre of Paris you enter a different world of forests and National Parks where you can stroll unhindered through beautiful countryside and reconnect with nature and relax in an entirely different way. It is called the Ile de France because of the network of rivers and canals that criss-cross the area and so a boat trip may be in order or perhaps just enjoying the wildlife is more your cup of tea!
And do not forget a visit to the stunning chateau of Versailles, a truly wonderful spectacle of old architecture, standing proud just a short distance from Paris. There is also Fontainebleau with its forests and castle. It is here that Napoleon said his farewells and you can visit the military museum to gain an insight into the man. Wander the streets and marvel at the French architecture and get a feel for how it was in a bygone age.
