The Town of Soufriere is by no means large and modern more like a step back in time with small grocery shops, a large church bang in the middle of the square lots of small bars or how the locals call them 'Rum shops"
a rum shop is not only where you of course enjoy the local rum some 100% proof so should come with a danger sign or ask for Bounty less strong and one can function the rest of the day, here you can enjoy the local way of life lots of information you can pick up depending on of course how much you remember. some rum shops that are aworth a visit would be
"archi's bar" and "the Big Yard"
and do not underestimate the local small restaurants, some with no sign and just perhaps one or two tables inside the food is amazing and great value you can have for example a local fresh fish meal for 9 uS$ complete with vegetables, salad and local provisions and a galss of fresh juice, or try a local Roti this is a curried lamb, chicken , beef or fish mixed with a curry sauce and potatoes and wrapped in a roti shell (a bit like a soft savoy pancake) for only 5 US$
some good local restaurants would be
The Still, Marth's Tables, the Big Yard, The creole pot, Susi's all just round the Church area in Soufriere.
for more elegant dining several hotel's offer great food and live entertainment, you can ask at your reception desk for details or talk to the local's.
The Town of Soufriere is by no mean's a shopping town yes you can get beach towels and flip flops but not a lot more so bring what you can from home.
Saturday morning however Soufriere has a great market from 5am to 9 after this you are lucky if you can get anything but look at it as an adventure you would not believe all you can find it is well worth to get up that extra hour .
Sunday afternoon on the Soufriere Bay Beach unless a Hurricane hits and then I think it would stil be on you have the ritual
"Beach Bash" this is a party going on until last man standing, loud music and I mean loud you can hear it miles away, lots of .......yes Rum but of course and BBQ Chicken and fish........very entertaining .bring ear plugs if you are staying in a hotel near the Soufriere beach.
To get Fresh fish if you are self Catering do not think you can ddo this in a shop, Oh no not hear you have to go in the morning when you hear the Conch Shell blowing and rush down to get the fish fresh from the boat or you can wait a bit longer and if any left the fishermen will bring it round in wheel barrows to sell.bring your own plastic bag as they have nothing to put it in and bring change they never have any oh and for an extra couple of dollar's they will cut and clean it for you if you ask.
what time do they blow the shell but of course from 5 to 6 in the morning................they like to get up early here
Church if you are a Catholic is at 8 and lasts two hours and please note any holiday the Catholic mass is 4 hours long so I found out the hard way.................
and you must not war shorts to church and you must cover your back and arms as a sign of respect.
Just a short walk no more than ten minutes from Soufriere is the wonnderful Botanical gardens and diamond falls well worth the visit plus you can enjoy a hot mineral bath for just a few dollars
ten minutes south of Soufriere you have our Volcano and the only drive in Volcano in the Caribbean and agin you can enjoy a hot bath wonderful and very good for you do not wear silver or any white clothing as due to the minerals it can damage quite bad the items, black would be best.
